The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is Canada’s official gold bullion specimen. A legal tender coin with face value in Canadian Dollars, the Government of Canada backs the purity and face value of each coin released by the Royal Canadian Mint. The 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin is one of the smallest in the series and is now available.
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979 to offer direct competition to the South African Krugerrand, then the only gold bullion coin available to private investors. Originally the Gold Maple Leaf was available only in a one ounce weight with .999 pure gold.
Through 1982, the RCM struck the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf only, but by November 1982 it was ready to expand the series into fractional-weight offerings as well. The first of these fractional-weight coins were the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins. Another major moment in this series was the introduction in November 1982 of .9999 pure gold content.
On the obverse of all 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins you’ll find an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Depending upon year of issue, the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II varies. From 1979’s introduction until 1989, a portrait of the Queen from Arnold Machin dominated the design. That was replaced from 1990 to 2003 by Dora de Pedery-Hunt’s depiction. Today, coins from 2004 onward have Susanna Blunt’s design.
